Bessie
Burkholder
Jun 13, 1952 — Apr 14, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bessie Lynn Burkholder on April 14, 2025, at 6:30 AM in Attica, Kansas. She was 72 years old. Bessie was born Bessie Lynn Fisher/Harding on June 13, 1952, in Arkansas, though her family celebrated her birthday on June 14 to avoid the misfortune of a Friday the 13th birthday.
Bessie was the daughter of Gene Fisher and Celie Lamb Fisher, but she was raised by Mary Louise (Polly) Fowler, whom she considered a second mother. Polly was married to James Fowler, who preceded Bessie in death. Bessie also had one brother, Robert Jean Fisher, who passed away earlier.
Bessie had three children: Chrissy Lynn, Kimberly, and James Carl Landon Burkholder. Chrissy Lynn has four daughters and two sons, Kimberly has one daughter, and James has two daughters. She cherished her role as a mother and grandmother, always offering unconditional love and support.
Throughout her life, Bessie was married four times. Her final marriage was to James Burkholder in 1990, with whom she shared many happy years. Though Bessie took his last name, she famously promised never to marry again after their union — a promise she kept.
Bessie was known for her fiery spirit and her unwavering honesty. She was never afraid to stand up for what she believed in, even if it meant being bold or outspoken. Though life was not always easy, she always acted with good intentions. She was a woman of strength, resilience, and great love, and while she may have been a "wild one" at times, her heart was always in the right place.
Bessie had a natural talent for the arts, excelling in drawing, painting, and creating intricate Indian bead designs for earrings and dream catchers. She had a deep love for the beauty in nature and was drawn to the states of Wisconsin, Arkansas, and Kansas, each of which held a special place in her heart.
Her final years were spent in Larned, Kansas, a place she considered home. Bessie's passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, and all of her loved ones.
As we mourn her loss, we celebrate the life of a woman who, in her own way, touched the lives of so many. We love you, Mom. You will always be in our hearts.
