Dimitrios Papaioannou passed away at his place of residence in Augusta, Kansas on November 5, 2025. He was born in Volos, Greece on March 7,1956. Dimitri was the youngest of two sons that lost their father at a very young age. He and his brother Yannis were raised by their mother and auntie in a home close to the sea. Growing up, Dimitri went to a Greek school during the day and to an English Speaking Institute at night. He studied hard and won a scholarship to travel to America as a foreign exchange student. He graduated high school and college in the United States. Dimitri grew up in a culture that was very disciplined, and also very social and community oriented. Living close to the sea, Dimitri was a sea-scout. He was an avid swimmer, and snorkeling and spear-fishing was a favorite pastime. He was very proud of his Greek heritage, and especially Greek food. In America, Dimitri developed strong relationships. Richard and Ann Haney became very close friends, and Dimitri was like a son to them. Through college, he lived with Marv and Evie Miska and their two daughters Paula and Paulette. He referred to them as his American family and they had a relationship that continued through his life. In Wichita, Kansas he graduated from WSU with a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science in 1981. He was also very involved in soccer at WSU. He was the president of the soccer club and the captain of the soccer team. Dimitri also married Theresa in 1981 and they had one son named Christos. They settled in Wichita and Dimitri spent the next 20 years at Bank of America doing IT work. Afterwards he went to work for Benetton Clothing as an IT manager. This took him and Theresa between Washington DC and Miami Beach until Dimitri retired at the age of 59. Returning to their home in Wichita, Dimitri was diagnosed with dementia. His condition steadily progressed until it became necessary for long term care. He was in the hospital for 6 months and then moved to a care home. He was there less than 3 months when he passed away at the age of 69. Dimitri is preceded in death by his parents Christos and Constantia Papaioannou, his Thea(auntie) Maria, in-laws Edward (Ursula) Brzezinski, Peggy Brzezinski, John (Debbie) Brzezinski, Donna (Ronnie) Twigg, and Jason Twigg.
