Dorsey Lee (Genteman) Carter was born February 7th, 1950, in Springfield, Missouri, to Mark Edwin Genteman and Tolitha Virginia Lee (Brumley) Genteman. She was the eldest of eight children and devoted much of her life to family, faith, and service.

Dorsey passed away at home, surrounded by family, on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 8:15 a.m., after a two-month battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She was 76 years old.

A 1968 graduate of Campus High School in Wichita, Kansas, Dorsey worked in a variety of roles throughout her life while also fulfilling her role of being a full-time mother. Her employment included positions at Dorsey Drug and Truck Parts & Equipment as a switchboard operator, work with Sav-a-Trip, custodial and driving duties at Conway Springs High School, and service at Spring View Manor. She also spent several years as a home health worker.

Dorsey had a creative spirit that found expression in crafts and handmade gifts she thoughtfully gave to those she loved. She found joy in making—crocheting, sewing, or crafting small tokens of affection—and those keepsakes remain treasured reminders of her attention to detail and the time she invested in relationships. Music nourished her soul; she played the piano, sang hymns, and participated joyfully in church life. Her faith communities and church conventions were sources of deep meaning, where her generous hospitality and steady encouragement left lasting impressions.

Dorsey’s family remembers her as a loyal wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and devoted sister whose wisdom and gentle counsel guided many through challenging times. She delighted in family gatherings, hearty meals, and the small rituals of daily life that made relationships strong. Though she is deeply missed, the warmth of her spirit, her steady faith, and the many small acts of love she offered will continue to be a living legacy for all who were fortunate to know her.

Dorsey is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Calvin; her siblings Brenda (John) Adcock, Debra (Andy) Brown, Randy (Teri) Genteman, Beverly (Rob) Gray, Lylla (Donald) Rausch, Daniel (Julie) Genteman, and Gala Mies; and her two sons, Mark (Vicki) Carter and Donavin (Yolanda) Carter. She also leaves ten grandchildren—, Jessica (Steven) Troup, Derreck (Ben) House-Carter, Weston, Kristin Nash, Brianna (Jeremy) Zoglmann, Alicia (Riggs) Robben, Braydon Carter, Ashleigh (Miguel) Herrera, Shawn Allen Jr., and Erin Allen—and twelve great-grandchildren: Gunner, Michael, Ryder, Emmy, Maddy, Dean, Liam, Remy, Kaylor, Fiorella, Suede, and Eliam.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mark Edwin Genteman and Tolitha Virginia Lee (Brumley) Genteman, and by her parents-in-law, Raymond Henry Carter and Mary Elizabeth (Farmer) Carter.

Services will be held Saturday, July 25th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Derby Library, 1600 E. Walnut Grove, Derby, KS 67037.
