George Walter Wright, Jr., 82, lifelong Abilene area resident, died Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at the Memorial Hospital in Abilene, Kansas.

He was born on June 12, 1943 in Greenwood County, Kansas, the son of George Walter and Bessie Evenson Wright, Sr. George was raised and attended a country school East of Eureka. In 1951 the family moved to Detroit, Kansas and George graduated from Dickinson County High School in Chapman in 1961.

After high school George moved to Manhattan where he worked at a lumber yard and as a ranch hand. George married Mayme White in September 1963 in Alta Vista, Kansas. They moved to Hatfield, Missouri where he was a Foreman on the Ironwood Ranch. Between 1970 and 1982 he drove a truck hauling grain and livestock. In the early 1980's George and his family moved to the Enterprise, Kansa area where he continued farming until retirement.

Through the years George enjoyed playing fastpitch and rodeoing. He later enjoyed attending rodeos and watching them on television.

Survivors include his two sons Clayton Wright of Abilene, Joe Wright and wife Cindy of Alva, Oklahoma; sister Opal Lucille Bartel of Glen Dive, Montana; and granddaughters Rochelle Ann Wright of Enid, Okla., and Penny Wright of Alva.

George is preceded in death by his parents; wife Mayme in 2004; and infant daughter Rochelle Ann "Punky" Wright.

A Celebration of Life and graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, May 1, 2026 at the Abilene Cemetery, Abilene, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Tammy Walker Cancer Center in Salina, Kansas.

Arrangements are by Affordable Cremations Plus, Wichita, Kansas.
