Jack Oliver Coleman, 77, died on March 4, 2026, of complications from surgery. He was surrounded by his family who talked to him, sang to him, and loved him until the end.

Jack was born on June 18, 1948 to Elizabeth and Roy Coleman of Mulvane, Kansas, where he lived much of his life. He is survived by his sister, Pamela Whitaker, his ex-wife, Sharla, to whom he remained close, his sons Joshua and Jeremiah of Wichita, Jonathan of Overland Park, his nieces and nephews, and their families.

Jack attended the University of Kansas receiving his degree in Music Education and Wichita State University receiving his masters in Music Education. He married Sharla in 1972 and they were blessed with their three sons: Joshua, Jeremiah, and Jonathan.

Jack worked in various positions during his working life. He taught vocal music in public schools. He wrote technical procedures for Beechcraft, then Boeing, and finally for his own company when he went into business for himself.

Music was one of his biggest passions. He played the piano, the guitar and the trombone well. He even played the trombone in the KU marching band at their 1969 Orange Bowl appearance. Before starting a family, he played and sang in a local Kansas City band. He had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing karaoke. He sang at his sister Pam's wedding and later at his own. He lead a cappella singing for decades at the various church congregations he attended and at various shelters where he volunteered for years. He even directed the official Boeing choir in Wichita, "The Stratosingers," from 1985-1996.

So much of his life was devoted to befriending and assisting others. He  babysat for his niece Julie's two-year-old triplets for a week. He coached many of his 3 sons' little league teams. He spent countless hours helping at the Union Rescue Mission in Wichita. He was active in prison ministries and drove monthly to Larned, KS to visit inmates there. In 2015, he attended a church mission in South Africa to help others. He was the payee for a blind friend and served as the best man in 3 weddings.

Jack walked "the walk." He was a deacon at the Mulvane Church of Christ where he raised his sons. He was ordained in 2019, and donated heavily to Christian pastors and ministries, domestic and foreign. In almost any way he could, he helped his family, his friends, his neighbors, various hitchhikers, the homeless and random passersby.

We will remember Jack for his devotion to God, his love for his family, his great sense of humor, his musical ability, and his kindness. His memorial service will be held on March 21, 2026 at 1:00 pm at East Point Church of Christ.
