Obituary

James L. Kern, 80, of Wichita, KS, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2025. Born in Parsons KS to Emil "Jack" and Velda (Minton) Kern on January 3, 1945. He grew up in Utica and Healy KS, and graduated from Hoisington H.S. in 1963. Jim enlisted into the United States Navy in 1964 and served two tours in Vietnam.


After serving four years in the Navy, Jim returned to Wichita KS. He began working in Sales for Larco Distributing. He married Sue Bowhay in 1969. They had two daughters, Dana Sebastian and Kelli Stephens (Ryan). They later divorced, but remained good friends.


Jim spent a lot of time on the golf course with his brothers Joe, Jack and all of their buddies. He is even a part of the "Hole in One" club.


Jim was known for his easy going, friendly personality. He truly enjoyed his time with friends and family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved keeping up with their sports and life adventures. There are thousands of pictures of his grandkids on his phone. They brought him so much joy. He loved each of them dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents Emil "Jack" Kern and Velda (Minton) Kern. Brothers, Joseph Kern and Jere Kern. Sisters, Barbara Nance and Tina Wallace. Nephew, Troy Kern. Son in-law, Sean Sebastian.


Survivors include his daughters Dana Sebastian and Kelli Stephens (Ryan). Brother, Jack Kern. Sister Donna (Kern) Stafford. Six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


A Celebration of Life will be held February 22, 2025 at 2:00pm River's Edge Venue 1600 W. 61st St. N. Wichita KS. 67204 (enter from 63rd/Armstrong).
