Jay Allen Shanks, 49, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025. Jay was born on October 7, 1975, in Wichita, to Charles Shanks (wife Cindy) and Cheryll Stopka (husband Richard).

Jay is survived by his devoted wife, Jennifer Shanks, with whom he celebrated 24 years of marriage, having wed on April 29, 2000. Together, they built a family that brought him immeasurable joy. He is survived by his children: daughter Casey Goforth (husband Zack) and their children, Kayleigh, Lily, and Zoey; his son, Wyatt Shanks; and daughter, Morgan Shanks, and her son, Wesley. Jay adored his family and was proud of the legacy they continue to carry forward.

A proud former Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy, Jay dedicated his career to serving and protecting his community. As an accomplished craftsman with an analytical mind, Jay loved spending part of his career at Textron and Leadfoot Solutions. Beyond his professional achievements, Jay was a man of laughter, mischief, and boundless creativity. Known for his legendary pranks and his commitment to "April Fools Month," he brought humor and lightheartedness to all who knew him.

Jay had a passion for woodworking, trivia, and sports. He was an avid fan of KU Basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs, and tailgated dozens of games at Arrowhead Stadium. He was also a loyal and supportive friend, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh.

A celebration of Jay's extraordinary life will be held tailgate-style, just as he wanted, at the Sunflower Shelter in Sedgwick County Park on February 22, 2025, at one p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Jennifer's friends have created a GoFundMe to help with the unexpected costs of this devastating loss. Any amount exceeding the required costs will be donated to cover negative lunch balances at Rae Woodman Elementary or Truesdell Middle School, where Jay attended many years ago. Additionally, the family invites you to honor Jay by spending time with your loved ones, sharing stories, and embracing the kind of joyful spirit that he always embodied.

Jay will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His laughter, kindness, and mischievous grin will remain forever in our hearts.
