John Peter DeFere

John Peter DeFere, 49, passed away on July 24, 2026. John was a light to this world—a man with a fierce love for God, unwavering devotion to his family, and servant's heart that touched everyone he met. His joyful laugh and warm hugs will truly be missed.

John was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on December 14, 1976, the son of Herbert and Maria DeFere. He often spoke of his fond childhood memories spent alongside his mother in her shop, Noah’s Ark Pet Grooming, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Growing up, he excelled behind the plate as a catcher for several baseball teams including Green Run High School and Norfolk State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science with an emphasis in sports medicine. He was also the first player recipient of the Harry Postove award with his name still residing on a plaque hanging in the hallway at the Norfolk Tides baseball stadium. His love for the game continued as he coached baseball and softball teams for his children.

In 2004, John married his best friend, Samantha. Together, they committed their lives in service to God as Way Corps ministers with The Way International. He enjoyed many years at Wake Forest University working in the Facilities Department. John also started the blog Lunchbox Leadership, inspired by the encouraging notes he wrote for his children-simple messages of love and Truth that reflected his heart as a father.

John is survived by his wife, Samantha; children, Kindle, Bailey, Isaiah, and Lydia; his mother, Maria; aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who became family.

A recognition service will be held in Wichita, Kansas at the Botanica Gardens on August 8, 2026.
