Kim was born in Wichita, Kansas on August 4, 1955, the eldest daughter of Bert and Pat Smith. Kim was raised in Wichita, Kansas and graduated from Wichita East High School. In 2005, she earned her master's degree in Management Information Systems from Friends University. She retired from Friends University in 2020 where she had worked for over thirty years.

She enjoyed passing on the love of reading to her grandchildren and, most recently, her great-granddaughter. Kim was blessed with a large circle of friends, who she loved dearly. Most of those friendships were made throughout the years from her previous attendance at Sharon Baptist Church, her membership in Beta Sigma Phi sorority, her employment at Wichita Clinic, and her many years working at Friends University.
Survivors include her daughter Lacey Jones and son-in-law Heath of Derby, KS; sister Shelly Stang and husband Steve of Wichita, KS; grandchildren Nathaniel Broughton, Zachary Broughton, Nicholas Jones, Evan Jones, Alexis McCune; great-granddaughter Purdaya Broughton; other beloved extended family including Edna White of Wichita, KS, Cheryl and Gilbert Pearce of Wichita, KS, Gary and Beth White of Broken Arrow, OK; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents Bert Smith and Pat Smith; sister Stacey Ferguson; sister Kerrie Borden; and extended family member Delbert White.
Kim requested that there not be a funeral service, but she did ask that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the nonprofit organization "Friends of the Wichita Public Library."
