Pat Englis, 87, died on January 4, 2025, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She died peacefully in her sleep while in the watchful care of Meadowlark Adult Care Homes in Wichita, Kansas.

Born Patricia Ann Goodnight on July 30, 1937, in Weaubleau, Missouri, Pat was the youngest of five children of Emmett Palome Goodnight and Callie McGee Goodnight. Pat attended Weaubleau Public Schools, where she was active in basketball and softball, graduating from Weaubleau High School in 1955.

Pat moved to Kansas City and worked in the accounting department at Western Auto. She met Don Englis, the love of her life, at a USO dance in Kansas City. They married on October 31, 1957, at the First Baptist Church in Arkansas City, Kansas. The newly married couple moved to Wichita, where Don was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base. Three children – Mary, Paul, and Robin – followed. Don and Pat's life took them to Arkansas City and then Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In retirement, Pat enjoyed fishing on Oklahoma's lakes, rescuing and caring for cats and dogs, and doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pat was also active with the LaFortune Park women's tennis group, taking on the role of organizing the weekly women's doubles friendly matches, until she turned 80 and declared that she was fully retired.

Pat is preceded in death by her husband Don, her parents and four brothers, and her mother-in-law Chris Englis, who was a second mother to her.

Pat is survived by her three children, Mary of Wichita, Kansas, Paul (Scott Fraser) of Seattle, Washington, and Robin (Troy Baker) of Springfield, Missouri, five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Alzheimer's is a persistent disease, removing memories and cognitive abilities as it progresses. Yet even in the grips of this persistent disease, Pat never lost her dry sense of humor, caring heart, and ability to smile and laugh. Pat's caretakers remarked about her sweet nature until the very end.

Alzheimer's may be a terminal illness, but the journey it creates teaches us much about love, life, and giving of ourselves.
