Obituary

Robert Eugene Hackney died Monday, August 25, 2025 at Homestead Estates in Wichita, Ks.

He was born on October 16, 1942 in Wellington, KS, the son of Robert Holmes and Mary Barbara Welsch Hackney.  Bob was raised on a dairy farm near Wellington.  In 1960 Bob graduated from Wellington High School.  He graduated from Kansas University School of Pharmacy, continued his education to get a master's degree at the University of Iowa, and finished with a PHD from Ohio State University.  Bob then moved to Dallas, Tx to work for Alcon Labs.  There he did research for 6 years searching for a treatment to cure viral diseases.  He then changed his career direction and became a hospital pharmacist and worked about 12 years as a traveling pharmacist for the VA Hospitals.  He worked all around the USA, before joining the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas for many years.  He spent his later years of his career working for Walgreens Pharmacies before retiring in 2017.

Bob married Katherine Allen Cooke on October 20, 2015.  They enjoyed traveling around the USA and Europe and taking cruises until her death on October 29, 2019.   Bob's favorite trip was to Alaska.  Bob enjoyed having a cat named Caney who kept him company though the Covid pandemic.  His favorite sports teams were the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers.  In May of 2024 Bob moved to Wichita, Ks., and lived 15 months at Homestead Estates, before being overcome by Alzheimer's and dementia.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents and wife Katherine Cooke.

Survivors include his brother Howard Hackney of Haysville, KS, and his sisters Maxine Louise Hackney of Albuquerque, NM, and Patricia Ann Miller of San Francisco, CA.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00am Monday, September 8, at the Prairie Trail Cowboy Church, 8552 S. Broadway, Haysville, KS 67060

Inurnment will take place next to his parents at the Sumner Memorial Gardens in Wellington, KS at 2:00pm, September 8, also.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established with Heartland Hospice.

Arrangements are by Affordable Cremations Plus, Wichita, KS.
