Sherman D. Ellis

Sherman Delane Ellis, 88, died Monday, October 12, 2026 at his home in Wichita, Kansas.

He was born on July 15, 1938 in Pratt, Kansas, the son of Samuel LeRoy “Roy” and Virginia Irene “Virgie” Ratlief Ellis. Sherman was raised in the Cunningham, Kansas area where he attended school.

After being discharged from the U.S. Navy on December 6, 1961, he returned to Cunningham and worked at his dad’s gas station along with custom cutting across the country.

Being a truck drive, Sherman moved to Dodge City in the mid 1970’s and formed Ellis Trucking. He married Charlotte McLemore there on September 25, 1976. They continued to live in Dodge City until moving to Porum, Oklahoma in 1989. Sherman and Charlotte moved to Wichita six years ago.

He enjoyed going fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife Charlotte of the home; his children Teresa Cox of Owasso, Okla.,
Lanyla Lorg of Tulsa, John Ellis of Wichita; Mary Ellis of Topeka, Ks_: sister Virginia Galliart of Cimarron, Ks.; Daughter in laws Marlena Ellis of Collinsville, OK Irene Ellis of Sparta, TN, 17 grandchildren; 33_ great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Sherman is preceded in death by his parents; sons Richard and Curtis Ellis; brother Norman “Shorty” Ellis; and sister Shirley Jean Ellis.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at  Anchor Church 704 N Baehr Street Wichita, Kansas 67212. Lunch to follow for family.
