Virgil "Scott" Mitchell

Virgil “Scott” Mitchell, 69, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, in Wichita, Kansas, surrounded by his family. He was born May 11, 1957, in Kingman, Kansas.

Scott moved to Garden City, Kansas, in 1968 and graduated in 1976. He later made Oklahoma his home and spent much of his working life as a truck driver. Over the years, he hauled cattle, drove over the road, and later hauled fuel. He worked for several companies throughout his career, including Hutchinson Oil and most recently Big Star Transport. Scott loved driving and took great pride in his work, remaining committed to working as long as his health allowed.

Scott was known for always having a smile on his face. He was humble, selfless, caring, witty, and rarely in a bad mood. He was always willing to help others, never forgot a birthday, loved hugs, and was known for his infectious laugh. He also loved food, animals, and spending time with his family.

Scott was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Nichols; his father, Virgil Mitchell; and his stepfather, Lee Nichols.

He is survived by his brother, Stephen R. Mitchell and his husband, Paul, of Lincoln, Nebraska; his sisters, Sandy Morris of Wichita, Kansas, Bev Wagoner of Wichita, Kansas, and Bridget Lougee and her husband, Richard, of Warren, Minnesota; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly.

Scott will be remembered for his kindness, his smile, his strong work ethic, his love of the open road, and the way he always went out of his way to help others.

Graveside services will be held at a later date and announced by Affordable Cremations Plus, Wichita, Kansas.
